Celebrate International Women’s Day With Music

Happy International Women’s Day!

What better way to celebrate this beautiful day than with music? I have curated a Spotify playlist called “Empowered Women Empower Women,” full of girl power anthems made by female artists! It is important for us to remember that...

“Women who support other women are confident, generous visionaries.” - Mariela Dabbah

While looking for more songs to add to the playlist, I was surprised to find that a lot of the preexisting girl power playlists include a lot of songs by male artists. Of course, there is nothing wrong with men voicing their support for women, but there’s something incredibly special and beautiful about women supporting each other.

Show your love and support for your fellow female musicians, artists, business women, scientists, teachers, dancers, friends, and family today, and every day.

Included in the playlist are some of my favorite female empowerment anthems, such as “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, which wastes no time in making sure everyone knows: “A girl can do what she wants to do and that’s / What I’m gonna do,” or “Salute” by Little Mix, which encourages women from all across the world to rise up and work together. My favorite song on the playlist to blast with your windows down and scream at the top of your lungs is “Woman” by Kesha. I remember listening to this song for the first time, and feeling my chest absolutely swell with pride. “I'm a motherf–ing woman, baby, that's right!” I also found some songs I had never heard before, such as “Fight Like a Girl” by Zolita, or “I Eat Boys Like You for Breakfast” by Ida Maria.

I encourage you to blast this playlist, scream along at the top of your lungs, and try to forget every care in the world. This playlist is collaborative!  So if your favorite girl power anthems aren’t on there, please feel free to add them!

And for our friends who are non-binary, I found some playlists made with you in mind.  This day is for you, too. The future is inclusive.
